Mercy Inc. was founded in December 1974 by Dr. Mervin Russell, President of World Gospel Crusades. With a heart for global outreach and compassion, Mercy was launched as a not-for-profit corporation in California, originally operating as Mercy Airlift. From the beginning, the organization was committed to bringing hope and practical assistance to communities in need around the world.
In 1977, Dr. Joe Rogers assumed leadership, providing visionary direction for over two decades. Under his guidance, Mercy expanded its efforts, becoming a public foundation in 1990. His passion for empowering others inspired a new generation of leaders, including his son, Don Rogers, who established Empowering Lives International—one of Mercy’s key partners.
Over the years, Mercy has continued to evolve while staying true to its mission of transforming lives. In 2003, Jim Truitt, Chair of the Economics Department at Baylor University, became President and Board Chair, bringing strategic leadership. Reverend Dennis A. Hardin followed as President/CEO in 2006, succeeded by Doug Hoffman in 2018, who currently serves as President and CEO.
As Mercy grew, so did its partnerships and impact. In 2019, Mercy took significant steps to enhance its independence and strengthen its mission. By 2022, under the leadership of Board Chair Karen Elliot Laroche, Mercy solidified its legal and organizational structure while maintaining a spirit of collaboration with like-minded partners.
Today, Mercy Inc. continues its legacy of compassion-driven service, transforming lives and communities through sustainable solutions and the hope of Christ.
The mission of Mercy is to transform lives caught in the cycle of physical, spiritual, and relational poverty. We do this through acts of compassion and the power of the Gospel. Empowered by your generosity, we work with partners and local churches around the globe to provide clean water, food security, children’s education, health, literacy, and life skills, and the hope in the Gospel.
